NEW RESIDENCE HALL UPDATES
  • Construction Update (provided by Leif Lamoray, Leftfield Inc. Project Manager):
  • Construction remains on schedule to open in August of 2010, although time has been lost on exterior work due to poor weather.
  •  Trade Updates
  • 75% of the sheathing is completed and masonry is underway. The building should be enclosed in the next 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Roof is 40% complete. Mechanicals and equipment for the completion of the roof are already on the roof, away from the neighborhoods.
  • The mechanicals are moving along well in the interior.
  • The total number of trade workers on site as of today is 86.
  • Trees Behind Existing Residence Hall
  • Trees were planted  ehind the existing residence hall at the end of September.
  • The work took a little longer than expected because the installer went the extra step to install a drainage system to prevent tree drowning.
  • Supersoil was also used under the ground to better sustain the trees.
  • Mulch was mounded around each tree to hold moisture.
  • The trees have a 1 year warrantee from the date of installation.

HVAC SYSTEM AT BUILDING 1
  • The fence has been installed around the data center condensing units.
  • The cooling tower has been shut down for the season.
  • OHI Lab performed noise testing at the beginning of October. The college is waiting on results and will report back once they are received.
  • The college did note that noise did increase when employees working on the systems left the door to the mechanical room of Building 1 open. The door will be fixed so that it will no longer need to be kept open when work is taking place.
  • Mr. & Mrs. Eugenio noted that the fence around the data center is making a positive difference.
LAFAYETTE STREET SERVICE ZONE
  • The curb of the service zone has been painted yellow, and the handicap area has been painted blue.
  • There has been a small issue with compliance in the service zone, but vendors are beginning to use the service zone for deliveries. The Mainstage Theatre marquee has been announcing  the existence of the service zone for those who may not have noticed the signs.
  • Compliance has been good in the handicap spaces. Andy Soll noted that the blue paint has gone over the two spaces of the ordinance and it is possible to fit 3 cars within this painted area. He suggested that another sign be posted or a sign denoting the division between handicap and regular 2-hour parking be placed at the end of the blue curb.  Councillor O’Keefe was going to arrange a visit to the site to look at the signs.

OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT ISSUES
  • The college noted that Shawn Newton, assistant director of Student Life, continues to work with students who have been identified and cited by the Salem Police Department.
  • Marcia Lambert mentioned that members of the South Salem Neighborhood Association may want to meet to discuss concerns. She will keep the committee up to date on this initiative.
NEW BUSINESS
  • Councillor O’Keefe asked about the empty flag pole on top of the Building 1. Mr. Soll stated that he would look into it.
  • Councillor O’Keefe requested input from Salem State College Police Chief Bill Anglin on hedges located at 67 Loring Avenue.  The owner of the property had been instructed by the city to trim the hedges.  Some trimming was done, but Councillor O’Keefe wonders if it was enough to improve safety at the intersection.
  • Ms. Lambert stated that the crosswalk at Raymond Road that runs parallel to Loring Avenue needs to be repainted.
  • John Walsh asked for an update on the former Weir property. Mr. Soll noted that work is taking place on the inside of the brick building. Parking on the property is open to all college affiliated vehicles.
MEETING SCHEDULE
  • The next meeting of the SSCNAC will take place on Monday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Enterprise Center Training Room B located on Central Campus at 121 Loring Avenue.
